Every restaurant near a theater has watched the same scene: a couple checks the time, flags the server, asks for the check and the entrées at once, and leaves with a box. The food was fine. The plan was wrong. They booked dinner at the time they wanted to eat rather than the time the show required.
The fix is to plan the evening backward from curtain, and to be honest about where you are eating relative to where you are sitting. On that second point we should be upfront about ourselves.
Where The Steer actually is
We are at 3151 Main Street in University Heights, near UB South Campus. That is not the Theatre District. Shea's, Kleinhans, and KeyBank Center are downtown or on the West Side, roughly five miles from us, and none of them is walking distance from our door. We are not going to pretend otherwise, because a pre-show dinner built on a fictional ten-minute stroll ends with you missing the first number.
What we do have is the Metro Rail. It runs down the middle of Main Street from University station, a short walk from us, to the Theatre District and on to the arena. Shea's own parking page recommends the train, points to Fountain Plaza station one block south of the theater, and suggests parking at the UB South station, which is our neighborhood, as a park-and-ride. That makes this stretch of Main a sensible place to eat before a downtown show: dinner up here, train down, no downtown parking hunt.
Two honesty notes on the train. Check the schedule the day of; NFTA has run reduced frequencies during 2026 track work, and a twenty-minute wait changes the arithmetic. And check the last train home if you plan to come back up for a drink afterward.
Work backward from curtain
Here is the arithmetic for a 7:30pm curtain at Shea's, eating at our place and taking the train. Adjust the numbers; keep the method.
| Time | What is happening | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 7:30 | Curtain | The fixed point. Everything else moves. |
| 7:10 | Seated in the theater | Tickets scanned, coats off, seats found. Twenty minutes is realistic, not generous. |
| 6:55 | Off the train at Fountain Plaza, one block to Shea's | A short walk, per Shea's own directions. |
| 6:20 to 6:30 | On the train at University station | Budget half an hour for the platform wait and the ride. Confirm the timetable that day. |
| 6:10 | Leave the restaurant | The walk to the station, plus a margin. |
| 5:55 | Check paid | Ask for it with the mains. Nobody has to hover. |
| 5:00 | Sit down and order | An hour for a starter and a main is comfortable. Forty-five minutes is tight but workable. |
| 4:45 | Arrive | The kitchen opens at 4, which is the single most useful fact about eating here before a show. |
Travel times are estimates from our end of Main Street. Check NFTA's trip planner and your venue's own directions on the day.
Driving instead of the train: it is the same road. Main Street runs from our door to the Theatre District, and on a normal evening it is a twenty-to-thirty-minute drive with time to park, more if there is an event at the arena the same night. The train removes the parking variable, which is the variable that ruins these evenings.
The four venues, honestly
- Shea's Performing Arts Center sits in the Theatre District downtown. Fountain Plaza station is one block south, and Shea's suggests UB South station as a park-and-ride, which is our neighborhood. The best fit for a dinner-then-train evening from here.
- Kleinhans Music Hall, 3 Symphony Circle, on the West Side. Not on the rail line. Kleinhans lists two lots at the hall, $10 for most events, and notes it is a cashless venue. From us this is a drive, roughly twenty minutes without traffic, and you will want to allow for the lot.
- KeyBank Center, One Seymour H. Knox III Plaza, at the downtown end of the rail line. The train from University station is the sane way to do a Sabres game from up here. Arena nights also mean a full train, so leave earlier than the table above.
- UB Center for the Arts is on UB's North Campus in Amherst, not the South Campus near us. Call it a fifteen-minute drive up the road, not a walk, and there is no rail connection between the two campuses.
Plan backward from the curtain, not forward from the reservation.
Tell the server you have a deadline
This is the step people skip because it feels rude. It is the opposite. Say it when you sit down: "We have a 7:30 curtain at Shea's and we need to be out by ten past six." A good server will steer you away from anything slow, fire the mains promptly, and bring the check with the plates. Without that sentence, they will pace your dinner like a dinner, which is exactly what you asked for by saying nothing.
Three things that help:
- Order everything at once, starters and mains together, and say you would like the mains to follow straight on.
- Ask for the check with the mains. Pay while you are still eating. It is normal.
- Skip the two-person steak. The King Cut Rib Eye is a dinner you linger over, and it deserves a night with no deadline. Save it for a proper date night.
What to order when the clock is running
Pre-show food should be satisfying, quick to eat, and not something that leaves you smelling of it in row F. From our menu:
- Wings, a half order, or the calamari to share. Fast to the table and fast to eat.
- A sandwich. The Beef on Weck is the local one and it can be eaten in a reasonable amount of time. The Stinger is the excessive one and it cannot. Choose accordingly.
- A salad with a protein added, or the Buddha burger for the plant-based seat. The lentil meatloaf is a full sit-down dinner: lovely, but budget the hour.
- One drink, not three. The bar will still be here after the show. The kitchen will not, which brings us to the next point.
Our kitchen closes at 10pm Tuesday through Saturday. A 7:30 show lets out too late for a second dinner here, but the bar pours until midnight midweek and 2am Thursday through Saturday, and the train comes back up Main Street. Dinner before and a drink after is a workable evening from this end of town, with the usual caveat about kitchen hours versus bar hours in Buffalo. Check the last train.
The short version
- Write down the curtain time. Subtract twenty minutes for getting seated.
- Subtract the honest travel time from wherever you are eating, plus a margin.
- Subtract an hour for dinner. That is your reservation time, and from our door it usually means five o'clock.
- Tell the server the deadline in your first sentence.
Our hours and directions are on the contact page, and if you are staying near campus, the neighborhood guide explains why this stretch of Main Street is unusually easy to do without a car. The place near South Campus opens at four. Build the evening on that.
