The internet's second opinion
You searched it with "reddit."
Smart. That's how you skip the ads and find out what a place is actually like. So here's the deal: this page is us — The Steer — answering the questions Buffalo actually types, as plainly as we can. Then go verify every word of it on r/Buffalo. We'll hold up.
The food questions
What's actually worth ordering?
“Best steakhouse in Buffalo?”
We dry-age our own beef and finish it over a wood-fired brick hearth — NY strip, king cut rib eye — in a saloon that’s been on Main Street since 1969. Not the fanciest room in the city, on purpose. The whole case is here.
“What is a Stinger and should I get one?”
Steak and chicken fingers on the same sub roll with hot sauce and bleu cheese — Buffalo’s most excessive sandwich, and yes. We wrote the explainer.
“Beef on Weck — where’s a real one?”
Sliced roast beef, kummelweck roll, horseradish you apply at your own risk. Ours is on the menu every day the kitchen runs, and here’s the history if you’re hosting out-of-towners.
“Vegan options that aren’t a portobello?”
Thirteen plant-based dishes — a vegan Stinger, lentil meatloaf, the Buddha burger, vegan fritters with hemp ranch — on the same menu as the dry-aged steaks, so mixed tables stop being a negotiation. The full lineup.
“Real Buffalo fish fry?”
Beer-battered, fresh-cut fries, on the menu all week and headlining Friday night the way it should in this town. New here? Why Buffalo eats fish fry year-round.
“Wings — are they good or just close to campus?”
Half or full, six sauces from hot to Sweet Sesame Chili Lime, plus Napalm for the brave and Peanut Satay for the smart. On Wednesdays they’re a dollar apiece, dine-in. In the city that invented them, we wouldn’t dare serve mediocre ones.
“Something Buffalo I can’t get at home?”
Stuffed banana peppers with Italian sausage and three cheeses. A Loganberry Mule at the bar. Poutine loaded like the border’s twenty minutes away, because it is. The menu goes deep.
The nights questions
What’s the move each night?
“Karaoke that’s actually fun?”
Tuesdays, mic opens at 8. The room crowns one winner every night — who leaves wearing an over-the-top gold medal, on purpose. The Sing-Off.
“Cheapest good night out?”
Wednesday: $1 wings, dine-in. Saturday: Saucy Saturday — $3 PBR and $3 well drinks from 9 to midnight. Neither is a coupon. They’re just the nights.
“Ladies night that isn’t sketchy?”
Thursdays. Bring your friends for Ladies Night: drink specials 9pm–midnight, big tables, and bar till 2am. The details.
“Where should Friday actually start?”
Dinner off the hearth at six, the saloon takes the room by nine, last call at two — and you never move your car. Friday at The Steer.
“Where to watch the Bills?”
Every screen, a room that reacts as one, wings on the table. Game day at The Steer is its own institution.
The logistics questions
The stuff you’d actually ask.
“Date night — impress without a jacket?”
A dry-aged steak by the hearth, a real cocktail list — espresso martini, Boulevardier — and a room that hums instead of whispers. There’s even a standing dinner-for-two drawing, free to enter, if you’re feeling lucky.
“Big group, one table, nobody organizing it well?”
Private room for 20 to 100, buffet or plated, one call plans the whole thing — birthdays, rehearsal dinners, graduation parties, memorial luncheons handled with care. Banquets.
“Parking? Hours? The boring stuff?”
Lot on site. Tuesday and Wednesday 4pm to midnight, Thursday through Saturday 4pm to 2am, kitchen till 10 every night we’re open, closed Sunday and Monday. 3151 Main Street — map and contact.
“Okay, but what’s the catch?”
Kitchen closes at 10 — eat before you settle in. Closed Sunday and Monday. Weekend nights get loud; if you want a hushed white-tablecloth evening, we’re honestly not it. Everything else, come test us: the menu, the nights.
Don't take our word for it
This page is ours, so of course it's flattering. The unfiltered version lives where you'd expect: ask r/Buffalo where to eat in University Heights, or read the Google reviews. If we're wrong about ourselves, Buffalo will absolutely tell you.
